Start with a physical size to calculate the pixels your file needs.
Required resolution
2,400 × 3,000 px
7.2 megapixels at 300 PPI
To calculate required pixels, multiply the print size in inches by the target PPI. A 12 × 18 inch print at 300 PPI needs 3600 × 5400 pixels (about 19.4 megapixels).
Required width (px) = print width (in) × PPI. Pixel results are rounded up so the image never falls below your quality target. When working in centimeters or millimeters, the size is converted to inches first.
Use 300 PPI for close-up photo prints. For posters and larger prints viewed from farther away, 200 or 150 PPI is often sufficient and lets you print larger from the same image.
